STORY: After decades of playing robots, learning so much across multiple disciplines, & making great friends, I have come to appreciate the huge boost that robotic combat has provided to my skill set & career.

Now, with 2 children of my own, I am finding ways to give back to the community.

I have been a judge for FIRST LEGO League & FIRST Robotics competitions, as well as several school science fairs.

For schools, daycares, libraries, & scout troops, I have given multiple presentations, including:

  • Interesting engineering career opportunities (like Mars rovers, aircraft construction, industrial automation, aircraft materials, & animated water fountains)
  • Evolution of BattleBots design (focusing on starting from humble beginnings, learning by trying & failing & learning & improving, iteration, creativity, & effective teamwork

However, my favorite activity has been leading Drawbots build projects for lower grades. Turn the classroom into an assembly line, starting with materials inventory, through the assembly steps, finishing with testing, then heading back to the assembly line as needed, based on test results. Take an old can or bottle, duct tape on 3 washable markers for legs, hot glue a battery + vibration motor subassembly, & decorate. The resulting Drawbot will dance its way across a papered floor, leaving colorful trails. In about 1 hour, students (with adult help) build their own robots that they get to take home, along with simple instructions on how to repair or modify them.

DRAWBOT SPECS: Bill of Materials for a Drawbot:

    1. Tin can or bottle for a body
    2. 3 Washable markers for legs (or be bold & go permanent!)
    3. Vibration motor (motor w/ off-center weight)
    4. Battery pack w/ power switch (sometimes can be purchased already wired to the motor)
    5. Tape & hot glue
    6. Decorations
    7. Kids!
